BBR Optometry strikes gold for ongoing charitable support

11 March 2014

BBR Optometry is delighted to announce it has received the Gold Award for its dedication to chosen eye care charity, Optometry Giving Sight (OGS).

Since it was founded in 2005, OGS has transformed the lives of millions of people in under developed countries by providing basic eye care and low cost glasses. In several countries it has also helped to implement long term eye care programmes by funding the education and training of local people in the field of optometry.

BBR supported OGS’s World Sight Day Challenge for the eighth year running in October last year, contributing to the global total of more than USD $850,000 which was raised as a direct result of the awareness raising day.

BBR has received the gold fundraising award for its level of support in the challenge, where overall funds raised has helped OGS deliver eye care to communities in need around the World.

BBR Practice Owner and UK National Chair of OGS, Nick Rumney comments, “For BBR to receive the gold fundraising award for our participation in the 2013 World Sight Day Challenge is just a fantastic achievement. The award demonstrates our commitment to the charity, and confirms to BBR staff and patients that our efforts will make a vast difference to those without basic eye care.”

Since 2007, more than $US8 million has been allocated to 67 projects in 38 countries throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America. This has enabled the training of more than 2,200 local people to become eye care professionals, the establishment of over 1,100 vision centres and optical laboratories, and eye care provision for over four million people.

Nick continues, “As the first UK member of OGS, BBR is proud of what the charity has achieved since it was founded. It really has transformed the lives of millions by providing the gift of sight through basic eye care - something often taken for granted in developed countries.

“As a practice that focuses primarily on patient care, BBR is honoured to be part of this outstanding achievement.”
