BBR Optometry is showing its support for World Sight Day 2014 this Thursday by donating all proceeds from the BBR Bake Off calendar to Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) – BBR’s eye care charity of choice.
Initially created to support National Eye Care Week 2014 at the end of September, the Great BBR Bake Off invites all patients and local people to submit a recipe using at least one food that benefits eye health – the best recipes will then be compiled into a BBR Bake Off calendar, which will be sold in practice to raise funds for the OGS ‘World Sight Day Challenge’.
For further support to OGS the practice will also be selling official World Sight Day wristbands, and will be asking for small donations from patients who require any spectacle adjustments or repairs – a service normally conducted free of charge.
Co-ordinated by IAPB (International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness) under the VISION 2020 global initiative, World Sight Day is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of blindness and vision impairment as major international public health issues.
This year’s event will focus on the theme ‘No more avoidable blindness’ in order to highlight the importance of implementing eye care services in under developed countries, home to millions of individuals suffering conditions like cataracts, trachoma and short-sightedness.
Founded nearly 10 years ago, Optometry Giving Sight is the only global fundraising initiative that specifically targets the prevention of blindness and impaired vision due to uncorrected refractive error.
It is also one of the only eye care charities that hosts its very own ‘World Sight Day Challenge’, urging all optometry professionals and those who value good vision to enter individual country challenges or donate directly to the cause.
All charitable donations are used to train local eye care professionals, establish vision centres and deliver eye care and glasses at low costs, in areas of the world where individuals do not have access to basic eye care.
Last year BBR Optometry received the Gold fundraising award for its level of support in the challenge, together with its ongoing commitment to helping Optometry Giving Sight deliver eye care to communities in need around the world.
BBR’s Practice Owner and the UK Chair of Optometry Giving Sight, Nick Rumney, comments “We created the Great BBR Bake Off as a fun and light-hearted challenge that would help us to highlight the importance of maintaining good eye health by eating the right foods and attending regular eye examinations - if we can raise funds for OGS at the same time, then even better!”
BBR Optometry will be accepting recipes for the BBR Bake Off until the end of October 2014, when the best recipes will also be entered into a prize draw to win a family ticket to this year’s pantomime performance at Hereford’s leading cultural venue, The Courtyard.
