Protect your eyes from UV rays with sunglasses

Most people think about protecting their skin during sunny days, but eyes are just as important, says BBR Optometry

We are constantly encouraged to make sure we protect our skin from the sun with sun creams and UV protected clothing. But many people forget they should also protect their eyes.

As part of Sun Awareness Week (14-20 May) the British Association of Dermatologists is raising awareness of the importance of skin protection against the sun and Hereford-based BBR Optometry is joining the cause by reminding people they also need to think about protecting their eyes.

“But protecting your eyes from UV rays is just as important as they can be harmful with such exposure linked to eye damage,” said Daniel Read, practice manager at BBR.

“Many people think sunglasses are simply there to help you see better in the bright sunlight, or even as a fashion accessory. But wearing sunglasses that block 100 per cent of UV rays and also absorb most HEV rays is just as important.”

In addition to protection from the sun, sunglasses are also important for driving or taking part in certain sports, such as cycling on sunny days.

“While a good pair of sunglasses will protect you from the harmful UV and HEV rays, they are also useful when driving or taking part in some sports, helping prevent glare from reflections caused by the sun or enhance contrast,” added Daniel.

BBR recommends investing in a good pair of sunglasses to ensure the health protection and vision benefits they provide.

“There are a range of frames to suit every individual and we can provide lenses in a variety of tints. It’s important to have the right tint as this can also make all the difference,” said Daniel.

“Whether fashion or prescription sunglasses, we have a wide range available and our team can discuss the variations in frame styles and tints.”

The BBR range includes Maui Jim, Serengeti, Bolle, Rocco by Rodenstock and Barbour Eyewear, among others.
